Do Fire Pumps Require Regular Filter Replacement?

Nov 18, 2024
Share:

Fire pumps themselves don’t have a traditional filter like an air or oil filter that would require regular replacement, as seen in engines. However, some components in the fire pump system may have strainers or screens that filter out debris from the water supply. These strainers can be crucial, especially if the water source contains particles or debris that could damage the pump or reduce performance.

Here’s a general guideline for fire pump maintenance related to filtration:

  1. Intake Strainers or Screens: Regularly inspect and clean intake strainers or screens. This prevents debris from entering the pump and obstructing the impeller, which could reduce efficiency and cause wear.

  2. Engine Air and Fuel Filters (for Diesel Fire Pumps): Diesel engines used in diesel fire pumps will have air and fuel filters. These need periodic inspection, cleaning, or replacement according to the manufacturer’s guidelines to ensure reliable engine performance.

  3. Routine Testing and Inspection: Conducting weekly or monthly testing per NFPA 25 standards helps check for any obstruction or performance issues due to buildup in strainers or screens.

These preventive steps help ensure that the fire pump system stays operational in an emergency.
